I Went to South Africa!

I haven’t updated my blog in two weeks because I had taken a 23 hour flight half way across the world to the beautiful country of South Africa for a mission trip with some really amazing people.

Differences to look for:

The first thing I realized when I pulled up to the mountain in Johannesburg was the protection around every single property. When I asked a guy about it there, his words were; “It’s all about protection here, you have to put up a gate around your property and your house, you must lock your door and the door to your bedroom when you sleep. Most people are also armed a majority of the time” said a man who worked for Door of Hope, a ministry that saves abandoned babies. Learn more here. The next thing I learned was pleasantries that were almost required in stores and everyday interaction. When I run into a grocery store and have to speak to someone it’s usually just “Where are the bananas?” and that’s it. In Johannesburg, this was definitely not a thing. You had to say hello, ask how they were and often you would learn their names, and where they were from. It was a lot more personable and easy to make friends. The first night I was there a local missionary gave us a lesson in different words, candy was called sweeties. Shopping carts were trollies and vacations were called going on Holiday.

My Experience

I think mission trips are not only perfect for those receiving spiritual or physical help but also for the person giving that help. I believe that it can really show a person how God wants to work in them. Whether you can go on a mission trip to the next town over, two states over or across the world I suggest you go and follow the Lord’s will.
